MacRuby
MacRuby “is a version of Ruby 1.9, ported to run directly on top of Mac OS X core technologies such as the Objective-C common runtime and garbage collector, and the CoreFoundation framework. While still a work in progress, it is the goal of MacRuby to enable the creation of full-fledged Mac OS X applications which do not sacrifice performance in order to enjoy the benefits of using Ruby.”

Delicious Library 2 released
Ars Technica: “DL2 brings some pretty significant new features and a freshly updated UI. At the top of the list is the ability to catalog far more than just media like DVDs and books; users can now keep track of their gadgets, toys, tools, and just about anything else that Amazon carries. Speaking of media, though, DL2 now also catalogs your entire iTunes library, including music, movies, TV shows, and even audiobooks.”
More awesome software from the Pacific Northwest. ;)
Congrats to Wil! And to Lucas and Mike, of course, even though they’re not still Monsters.

NetNewsWire 3.0.1b7
NetNewsWire 3.0.1b7 addresses the top-priority bugs from the 3.0 release.
- Smart lists and searching no longer use Spotlight, which wasn’t working for some people. (However, you can still search news items via the system’s Spotlight search.)
- The Combined View is now based on the version that was in 2.x, since that version doesn’t rely on JavaScript and thus doesn’t crash. There is more to do with the Combined View: pagination (for performance) and UI (to make titles easier to read and make it look cooler).
We’re working on other bugs, too—but these are the highest-priority items.

NetNewsWire style: ollicle reflex updated
A cool update to a NetNewsWire style: ollicle reflex now “displays a del.icio.us Tagometer Badge for each viewed news item. This shows you how many del.icio.us users have tagged the news item you are viewing and the top ten tags they used.”

YouTunes: An Example Yahoo! Pipe
Nick Bradbury: “A pipe takes input from different sources, mixes them together based on criteria you specify, then outputs the results as a single RSS feed. In this example, I created a pipe named ‘YouTunes’ which links the top 10 songs from iTunes with videos from YouTube.”

Mac OS X S3 Browser
Olivier Gutknecht: “S3 browser is a Mac OS X administration tool for the Amazon S3 data storage service. My goal is to build a small application useful in itself for developers or users subscribed to the S3 service, but also to provide example code showing how to access S3 through the REST API in a OS X Objective-C client application, on top of OS X technologies (Keychain, URL loading system, ...).” (Via Kevin Purcell on the Seattle Xcoders list.)

NetNewsWire Style: Samurai Coder
Samurai Coder “is quite simple a style with no graphics. Every meta content (such as source, poster’s name, tags/categories/subject and a link to comments) is located on top, packed in a compact yet readable space.”

MacTech Top 25 List
MacTech Magazine: “MacTech Magazine today announced the MacTech 25: The Mac technical community’s most influential people.”
Apple employees and MacTech staff weren’t eligible, and voting was public, which makes this quite different from the MDJ Power 25. Though a few of the same names appear (including mine ;), the MacTech list looks like it has more developers and bloggers. Names include such rock stars as Jonathan “Wolf” Rentzsch, Drunkenbatman, John Gruber, Aaron Hillegas, John Siracusa, and plenty more.
(Okay, the name Drunkenbatman still cracks me up, especially to see it played straight on a list like this. Love it.)

Steve Jobs tops Mac industry influencer list
Macworld UK: “The results of the sixth MDJ Power 25 list once again puts Apple CEO Steve Jobs at the top of the Mac industry tree.” No surprise that Jobs is at the top—the surprise for me was finding myself on the list. ;)

Interview with John Gruber
GUIdebook: “The other thing I remember from the initial Aqua demo was the crazy purple button in the top-right corner of each window. Clicking it would put you in a new ‘single-window mode,’ where you could only see one window at a time. The fact that that feature never saw the light of day is proof that it’s possible to talk Steve Jobs out of a bad idea—that purple button had ‘Jobs’ written all over it.”

NewsGrowl
Ian Lloyd: “NewsGrowl is a script for NetNewsWire 2 that displays a count of unread headlines via Growl. It scans NetNewsWire for groups and top-level subscriptions (subscriptions that are not in any group), which are then listed in the Growl Preference Pane.”

Tip: How to see all the latest items at once
NetNewsWire has a special, built-in subscription that includes all the unread items.

It’s kind of like a super-group in that it shows news items from anywhere in NetNewsWire.
Choose to show it. It will appear at the top of your subscriptions list, with a green globe icon.

Tip: Use the Help Book
NetNewsWire comes with an extensive Help book. Choose to open it.
The Help book is also searchable. Type a question (or a keyword or two) into the search field at the top of the window and hit return.
If you need to find something, the Help book is the first place to look.
