Xcoders: Google GData APIs
At tonight’s Seattle Xcoders meeting: “Greg Robbins, Google software engineer based in Kirkland, is going to give us a little overview of the Objective-C GData APIs for working with Google services programmatically.”
Sounds intriguing — I’m looking forward to it.

Delicious Library 2 released
Ars Technica: “DL2 brings some pretty significant new features and a freshly updated UI. At the top of the list is the ability to catalog far more than just media like DVDs and books; users can now keep track of their gadgets, toys, tools, and just about anything else that Amazon carries. Speaking of media, though, DL2 now also catalogs your entire iTunes library, including music, movies, TV shows, and even audiobooks.”
More awesome software from the Pacific Northwest. ;)
Congrats to Wil! And to Lucas and Mike, of course, even though they’re not still Monsters.

SenseArray Filtering Gives You Stories Based on Your Preferences
NewsGator Daily: “Beginning today, NewsGator has enhanced its ability to offer users great stories from feeds that they haven’t seen. We have partnered with Uprizer Labs, whose SenseArray collaborative filtering software is able to provide recommended stories based on users’ own preferences.”
In NewsGator Online, for now, not in the client products — but it’s a great idea.

BusySync 2.0 Released with Google Calendar Support
TidBITS: “BusyMac released BusySync 2.0 today, an update to its software that synchronizes iCal calendars across systems. The new version’s primary change beyond bug fixes and robustness is the capability to synchronize with Google Calendar.”
More awesome Mac software from the Pacific Northwest. ;)
By the way, John Chaffee of BusySync will be presenting at next week’s Seattle Xcoders meeting on automating tech support using FogBugz, shell scripts, etc.

Port Map and TCMPortMapper
TheCodingMonkeys: “Some times you want to access your computers at home from anywhere in the world. Be it the web server on your home server, the file sharing on your desktop machine or a remote login to your parent’s computer to support them doing their work. This is where the application ‘Port Map’ might come handy.” (New software from the SubEthaEdit folks.)
Side note: check out the screenshot and note how iPhone-style On/Off widgets appear in the app. I’ve also seen this in VPN Tracker. I wonder if we’ll see it in more apps, and if it will become a standard part of the Mac user interface.

On Twitter
Tim Bray: “I enjoy it for the background-conversation-hum effect, sort of like being in a busy coffee shop. And there’ve been a few times when I’ve got professionally-important news way before I would have seen it on another channel, or that I might otherwise not have seen at all.”
I highly recommend Twitterrific. (I’m on Twitter, cunningly disguised as brentsimmons.)

JS + BBEdit + SD
Seth Dillingham talks about how he came to contract for Bare Bones Software: “When I’m telling this story in person, especially if Rich is nearby, I like to say that they tried to call my bluff but found I wasn’t bluffing.”

Interview with Daniel Jalkut
In Shawn Blanc’s interview, Daniel says: “There is a tendency within Apple to strive for perfection. Nobody laughs at you if you try to make something flawless. This is different from many other software businesses, and was dramatically different from the few little software-related jobs I’d had before.”

KSExtensibleManagedObject
Mike Abdullah (of Karelia Software) releases KSExtensibleManagedObject, which extends Core Data: “On the surface KSExtensibleManagedObject operates just like a normal managed object. But, if you call -valueForKey: or -setValue:forKey: it will happily return/store the value, rather than raise an exception as NSManagedObject would... Whenever a key is accessed that the model does not natively handle, KSExtensibleManagedObject steps in to convert and store it as raw data.”

Monocle 1.5
waffle software released Monocle 1.5, a search engine launcher: “As you type, suggestions and preliminary results (both from Google) appear in a list right below, so that you can hone your query or go right to a result and cut out the results page.” Cool app. (We’ve been using betas. It’s donationware.)

Jens Gone Indie
Jens Alfke: “I’ve left Apple, and I’m now working on my own, from home, as an indie software developer. I have plans for at least two kick-ass Mac apps, I’ll probably contribute to a few open source projects, and I may dabble in some web stuff.”

NetNewsWire + iPhoto
Miraz Jordan writes about how, in NetNewsWire, “it’s easy to add photos from RSS feeds to iPhoto: Control click on the photo and choose Add Image to iPhoto Library from the contextual menu.”
One of my favorite parts of working on NetNewsWire is the connection to other apps: weblog editors such as MarsEdit and ecto, Apple apps like iPhoto, Address Book, and iCal, and apps like VoodooPad and Twitterrific, from my fellow Mac developers.

Big Transmit Review
Shawn Blanc: “And anyone that uses a Mac knows I mean more than, ‘Transmit is an FTP client for the Mac platform.’ Mac users have a high standard for their software. It has to do more than just work; Mac applications have to possess style, class and be enjoyable to use, and work like a charm.”

Seth on paying for Twitterrific
Seth Dillingham: “People who use this hack are stealing money from the Icon Factory: they didn’t pay for the software, and they’re not showing the ads. In response, I just registered my copy.”
